ACT Matrix Toolkit for Parent Training

$11.99

Help caregivers move from knowing what to do to choosing what matters, even when parenting gets hard. ACT Matrix tools for exploring the thoughts, feelings and urges that show up in hard parenting moments.

Description

Help caregivers move from knowing what to do to choosing what matters—even when parenting gets hard.

This Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) resource was designed for BCBAs, behavior analysts, therapists, and other clinicians working collaboratively with parents and caregivers. It provides a structured, behaviorally grounded way to explore the thoughts, feelings, urges, and other private events that may influence caregiver behavior during challenging parenting moments.

Using the ACT Matrix, clinicians can help caregivers identify what matters to them as parents, notice the internal experiences that show up when parenting becomes difficult, recognize actions that function as away moves, and identify values-directed actions they can take even when discomfort is still present.

Rather than simply asking, “What kind of parent do you want to be?” this resource gives clinicians ready-to-use questions and facilitation guidance for turning values into meaningful caregiver conversations.

INCLUDED IN THIS RESOURCE:

• Using an ACT Matrix — a clinician-friendly explanation of the Matrix and how the four areas work together
• How to ACT — practical guidance for facilitating ACT-informed caregiver conversations without turning them into an interrogation
• Parenting Young Children (Ages 2–7) question bank
• Parenting School-Age Children (Ages 6–12) question bank
• Parenting Teens (Ages 13–18) question bank
• Parenting in the Context of Neurodivergence & Disability question bank
• Blank Parenting ACT Matrix for collaborative use during sessions
• Parenting Values Identification Worksheet to help caregivers clarify what “toward” means for them

THE FOUR AREAS EXPLORED

❤️ VALUES — Who & What Matters?
Who does the caregiver want to be as a parent? What qualities, relationships, and directions matter most?

☁️ UNCOMFORTABLE INNER EXPERIENCES — What Shows Up?
What thoughts, feelings, memories, urges, worries, or body sensations arise during difficult parenting moments?

← AWAY MOVES — Escape Route
What does the caregiver tend to do to reduce discomfort, gain relief, or regain a sense of control? How are those responses working in relation to what matters?

→ TOWARD MOVES — Valued Direction
What can the caregiver do—even while uncomfortable thoughts and feelings are present—that moves them toward the parent they want to be?

DESIGNED FOR CLINICAL USE

This is not a general parenting workbook intended to prescribe the “right” way to parent. It is a clinician-guided resource designed to support collaborative reflection, perspective taking, and values-directed behavior within ABA parent training and caregiver consultation.

The question banks are intentionally adapted to different parenting contexts. Clinicians can select the page that best fits the caregiver in front of them or pull questions from multiple sections.

The included parenting values worksheet can also function as a structured preference assessment for caregiver values, helping clinicians move beyond broad questions about “what matters” and identify meaningful directions that can inform the ACT Matrix and caregiver goals.

GREAT FOR:

BCBAs and behavior analysts • ABA parent training • caregiver consultation • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-informed ABA • parent coaching • caregiver values work • collaborative treatment planning • supporting psychological flexibility • conversations related to emotional regulation and values-directed responding

WHY CLINICIANS MAY FIND IT USEFUL

Sometimes a caregiver already knows the parenting strategy.

They know they want to pause.
They know they don’t want to yell.
They know they want to allow more independence.
They know they want to remain consistent.

But when frustration, worry, guilt, fear, or uncomfortable body sensations show up, knowing the strategy may not be enough.

This resource helps clinicians explore that space between knowing what to do and being able to do it when it matters.

The goal isn’t to eliminate difficult thoughts and feelings or achieve perfect emotional regulation. The goal is to help caregivers notice what’s showing up, recognize the choices available, and practice actions that move toward what matters.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy-informed. Behaviorally grounded. Designed for real caregiver conversations.
